Residents try their best to collect dumped rubbish but call for extra bins
Tidy littering* - June 14th
Better weather and increased relaxation in terms of numbers of individuals allowed to mingle has continued to put pressure on the litter bins and the ranger.
Bottle and cans left in the middle of the common - 14th June
One local resident was so appalled she went home and collected bin bags and gloves rather than carry on with her run and collected six bags of rubbish yesterday morning - including a deck chair! She is also asking visitors why they litter:

The Spencer Pub is clearing litter that is obviously not their products with their bins being filled with pizza boxes, bottles and cans that they do not sell, a spokesperson told this website that they have increased their collections. On average they sell around 20 bottles and no canned drinks (or pizzas) a day.

The Putney Society welcomed the re-opening of The Spencer but tweeted reminders to customers to bin their empties:
Keep Britain Tidy Deputy Chief Executive Richard McIlwain said: “The COVID-19 crisis has highlighted how much people across Britain value their local parks and green spaces and how vital they are for our physical and mental health.Really good news that you can get a pint from @TheSpencerPub by Putney common but why not use the waste bags that they provide. “Now that the government’s new guidelines allow people to spend more time in these precious spaces, we all need to do our bit to keep them clean and safe for everyone. Council staff across the country deserve all our thanks and support for the work they have been doing while we have been staying at home and now is the time when we can show them our gratitude by doing our bit.
“Bins may not be emptied as often as normal and litter-picking may be limited so if you are eating or drinking in the park or at the beach, don’t under any circumstances leave your rubbish where you’ve been sitting and don’t fill the bins there with it – take it home.
“We all want to be able to enjoy places that are clean and litter-free and this will not be possible if people don’t act themselves. No one wants to see pictures of our beautiful parks and beaches strewn with litter and plastic pollution and we hope that everyone will heed this message and do their bit.”
This website has contacted Wandsworth Council and the Wimbledon & Putney Common Conservators to see what action they propose to take to assist in the reduction of litter left in this area, we await their responses.
In the meantime, local residents are asking visitors to the common to take their litter home with them if the bins are full.
Take it home - you carried it here!
