Lidl looks set to open a store in Putney later this year as it is about to sign the contract to take over its new premises in the building formerly occupied by Halfords. Completion of the deal should be in the next few weeks. The move comes the week after the company's British operations opened their 800th outlet.

The store will take some time to fit out as the wall between the two units (Halfords and Superdrug in the image above) will need to be taken down. Lidl GB have been asked for more details on timing.

Nicola Grant, Executive Director of Positively Putney BID, has welcomed the news that Lidl are on the way, “Positively Putney are very excited about Lidl opening in the ex Halfords unit. They are a well established retailer with a big expansion programme. We hope that they will be open by the Autumn. This building has looked unloved for a long time and it will be good to have it back in use. We also look forward to Jungle Rumble golf opening in the upstairs unit.”

The opening hours given on the Premises Licence document (number: 2019/303953) are for the store to be open seven days a week from 7am to 11pm. It is not known if these will be the opening hours of the store when it commences trading.

The discounter has opened 50 new stores in the past 12 months - and is aiming to meet the target of 1,000 stores by the end of 2023 in Great Britain.

Employees working in the Putney store will receive an hourly rate of £10.75 (all stores within the M25) which Lidl UK are introducing from 1 March , which is higher than the Government’s “National Living Wage“, making them amongst the highest paid in the supermarket sector.
