A Nepalese curry house in Hammersmith has been rated zero out of five by food hygiene inspectors.
Kathmandu Inn was inspected by Trading Standards last month, and the results revealed last week show that “urgent improvement” is needed.
It’s average rating from 62 Google reviews is 4.5 stars. It also has 4.5 on Tripadvisor from 52 guests.
But inspectors said improvements were necessary with “hygienic handling of food including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage”.
The Goldhawk Road eatery was said to need “major improvements” for ensuring its food was safe to eat, “including having appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control, to enable good food hygiene”.
Inspectors also said major improvements were needed in terms of the cleanliness of its kitchens.
The Food Standards Agency’s website shows only one other restaurant or café in the borough of Hammersmith and Fulham has a zero rating. While there are 35 places with a rating of one out of five.
The Kathmandu Inn was given a dazzling review by The Guardian in 2010.
Critic Will Norman wrote that it “appears to follow the hygiene regimen of a quarantine ward”, and that the floor was “polished until you could literally eat your dinner off it”.
“It takes a clever chef to produce something of this ferocity that still lets you taste each spice distinctly,” the review said.
The restaurant’s owners were approached for comment.
