New trees planted and cycle stands installed
Footways in Hammersmith town centre are getting a facelift.
Hammersmith & Fulham Council says its contractors FM Conway have begun removing unneeded street furniture like bollards, railing and signposts, laying new paving slabs, planting new trees and installing new cycle stands to make the area around Hammersmith Broadway better.
Work to the following compact areas will be done in stages over a number of months to reduce the impact on pedestrians and businesses. The areas in order of works are:
- (Stage 1) Shepherds Bush Road: from the Hammersmith & City Line underground station to the former Hammersmith Palais
- (Stage 2) Shepherds Bush Road and Hammersmith Road - from Hammersmith Library (which is currently being refurbished) to Bute Gardens
- (Stage 3) Hammersmith Broadway Station: the entire forecourt area at the north entrance to the Broadway Centre (facing King Street and Shepherds Bush Road)
- (Stage 4) The pavement between King Street and Beadon Road (opposite north entrance of Hammersmith Broadway Centre).
- (Stage 5) The central reserve islands - in front of the Broadway Centre and Shepherds Bush Road.
There will be no major diversions for pedestrians and residents and workers will still be able to get into buildings and homes, the bus and train stations, and the Broadway Centre. The pedestrian crossings around the Broadway will not be affected be the work and there will be no disruption to road users.
Cllr Victoria Brocklebank-Fowler, H&F Council’s cabinet member for transport and technical services, says: "This work will make it easier for pedestrians around Hammersmith and improve the look and feel of the area by getting rid of unnecessary railings and posts that clutter our pavements. There will be minimal disruption to pedestrians, cyclists or motorists and this work will make the town centre better for everyone.”
