Bridge to Bridge Event Raises Cash for St Peter's Primary
As first phase of redeveloped building set to be ready for use after half term
More than 150 children, parents, teachers and governors from St Peter's CofE Primary School in Hammersmith have taken part in a sponsored Bridge to Bridge event – running, cycling and walking a route along the river Thames to help raise cash for the school.
The money will go towards projects including the redevelopment of school buildings.
The school’s new headteacher Karen Frazer said the event was a huge success.
" It was amazing to see everyone there, enjoying themselves raising money for the school," says Miss Frazer, who joined the school in September from St Stephen’s CE Primary School in Uxbridge Road, where she served as deputy headteacher.
Organised by Year 5 teacher Marc McLeod and parent Toby Marsh, the Bridge to Bridge event on September 26 spanned 4.5 miles of riverside paths from St Peter’s Square in Hammersmith, to Barnes Bridge and over the river to Hammersmith Bridge, before returning to the square.
Local businesses turned out to support the event, The Cross Keys pub hosted a barbeque, The London Cycle Workshop were on hand to help with any bike repairs and Gelatiamo provided refreshing ice cream.
" It was fantastically organised and a real team effort, with the Friends of St Peter’s (FOSP) helping with marshalling, registration, selling refreshments and clearing away," adds Miss Frazer.
The event, which hopes to raise more than £5,000, is part of a wider fundraising drive at the school, which will also include movie nights for pupils, quiz nights, and the annual Christmas Fair on December 5.
Not only is the school raising cash for ongoing projects such as new gymnastics equipment and an upcoming arts week in spring next year, but it is also in the midst of a redevelopment of its Victorian buildings.
The school is currently spread out across three sites in St Peter’s Road but the modernisation work will allow all of the classrooms to be moved into one building.
St Peter’s Church last month donated £5,000 towards the school revamp, and the first phase is set to be complete in November, with pupils in Years 3 to 6 moving into their new classrooms after half term.
" I am delighted to report that the building project is progressing well and we are still on track for the Key Stage Two classes and our offices to move into the new building after October half term," says Miss Frazer.
The second phase of the work is due to be completed before Easter.
