Police Tackle Dangerous Cycling on Broadway

58 warnings and 6 penalty notices issued

Complaints had been received from the public about cyclists riding dangerously on footways and going through red lights when pedestrians were crossing.

As part of the operation David Kent, a local resident who is visually impaired, was on hand to explain the impact of cycling dangerously on pavements from his perspective. There was also a representative from the local council Road Safety Unit to offer advice to many of the cyclists that were stopped.

A total of 64 cyclists were stopped during the two days, 58 received warnings and 6 were issued with fixed penalty notices.

Sergeant Jayme Johnson from Hammersmith & Fulham Safer Neighbourhoods Team said: " Our aim was not to penalise cyclists, but rather improve their awareness and allow members of public to explain why they feel intimidated when cyclists ride quickly along pavements or cross red traffic signals when pedestrians are crossing. 

" If cyclists fail to stop for police or are riding dangerously with no regard to the safety of others, they will be issued with a penalty notice carrying a £30 fine."
