Council asks for views on proposed extensions to Lakeside Sinclair Blythe area
Hammersmith and Fulham Council is currently consulting local people and inviting feedback on a range of issues affecting our community.
Residents in Hammersmith have until September 30 to comment on a proposed extension to the Lakeside Sinclair Blythe conservation area.
The council says following the townscape analysis undertaken as part of the character profile process, three extensions to the area are proposed.
Area 1 involves a new extension, whilst areas 2 and 3 involve transfers from adjoining conservation areas of areas already designated but where it is felt that their character suggests that they would be more appropriately included in the Lakeside Sinclair Blythe conservation area.
Area 1. Netherwood Road, Rockley Road, Westwick Gardens, Minford Gardens
This area shares characteristics in terms of scale, brick type and use of stucco decoration with the part of the existing conservation area covered by Lakeside Road and Sinclair Road. Developed at the same time it is also largely comprised of three storey plus basement terraced houses made from gault brick with stucco dressings. The buildings retain most of their original features and there are only limited changes to the roofscape. The terraces are largely harmonious apart from where there was limited clearance and redevelopment after war time bombing.
Area 2. Maclise Road, Hazlitt Road, Beaconsfield Terrace Road, Blythe Road
The terraced buildings in these streets share characteristics of scale, proportions and brick type and decoration with the part of the conservation area covered by the west side of Hazlitt Road and Sinclair Road. Largely gault brick with stucco dressings and between 3 and 4 storeys.
This enclave of streets is tucked away behind Olympia exhibition halls and as such feels segregated from the rest of the Brook Green Conservation Area. It is logical to transfer these streets into the Lakeside Sinclair Blythe conservation area to which it has much closer proximity and similarity of street and building form.
Area 3. Blythe Road, Lakeside Road
Nos. 177-183 Blythe Road currently in the Melrose conservation area are similarly scaled terraced houses with canted bays to nos. 163-171 Blythe Road which are in the Lakeside Sinclair Blythe conservation area. They all read as part of the same terrace despite some differences in form. It is logical therefore to transfer nos.177-183 into the Lakeside Sinclair Blythe conservation area. Cornwall Mansions on Blythe Road and the Methodist Hall on Lakeside Road define the entrance to Lakeside Road and it is therefore logical to transfer them from Melrose conservation area into Lakeside Sinclair Blythe conservation area.
