Century-old tree will be given a plaque

A tree in the centre of Ravenscourt Park has been named as one of 20 ‘Great Trees of London’.

The London plane tree that has stood in Ravenscourt Park for well over 100 years was nominated by local resident Bobby Talalay.

It is one of nine plane trees to be named on the list by Trees for Cities and the competition was judged by a panel of horticultural experts and well-known personalities.

The charity plants trees and re-landscapes urban public spaces, and has linked up with Barratt Homes, The Forestry Commission, and radio station Magic 105.4 to hold an event to celebrate the significance of the trees.

A plaque will be unveiled in Ravenscourt Park at some point in the coming weeks.

Great trees are judged on their historical significance, and how they relate to past events or people, where they are situated – this is usually in a landmark location and must be of notable physical character, being very large, old, or an unusual shape.
