Latymer Upper School Team Join the Big Debate

London regional finals of country's toughest competition

It's not just potential prime ministers who are holding live debates. On Tuesday April 20, sixth formers from Upper Latymer School will be among the teams debating the most important issues of our time.

The teams are taking part in the London Regional Final of a national sixth form debating competition, the Institute of Ideas and Pfizer Debating Matters Competition at the National Theatre Studio.

The winning school will walk away with £1,000 in Hodder Education books and entry into the three-day residential UK National Finals taking place at the Royal Society of Medicine in London, in July.

Having already seen off stiff competition in the London qualifying rounds last November, the Upper Latymer students – many of whom will also be first-time voters in the upcoming election - are now bracing themselves for an even greater challenge.

They will be debating motions on burning contemporary issues such as: "The response to the 2009 MPs' expenses scandal will strengthen democracy" and "There should be no limits on artistic expression".

Debating Matters is renowned for being the toughest competition of its kind in the country, with debaters being grilled by an audience of fellow students, members of the community and an X-Factor style panel of expert judges who will see through the spin and scrutinise their arguments to ensure they have done their research.

Other teams taking part are Ashcroft Technology Academy from Wandsworth, Camden School for Girls, Lampton School from Hounslow, the Piggott School from Wargrave and Queen Mary's School from Basingstoke.
