Victorian town house in West Kensington catches fire

A fire which started in a house on Edith Road and spread to a neighbouring property was tackled by London Fire Brigade today (19th January).

A woman who was cleaning at the property in West Kensington W14 escaped the house before the arrival of the Brigade after being alerted by the smoke alarm. She was treated at the scene by the London Ambulance Service for slight smoke inhalation. Another woman and a baby escaped from next door before firefighters arrived and they were also treated at the scene.

The fire badly damaged the second floor and loft conversion of the three storey house, as well as part of the neighbouring property's loft conversion.

Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters and officers attended the blaze after being called at 1.04pm. The fire was under control in two and a half hours. Fire crews from Kensington, Chelsea, Hammersmith, Chiswick, Soho, Paddington and Battersea fire stations were involved. Crews remained at the scene for some time damping down the fire.

The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.
