Chance to See Future Look of King Street

Exhibition will show three developers' plans for West End of road

A public exhibition this November will give residents a golden chance to see the three rival proposals being put forward to regenerate the West End of King Street.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council is looking for a developer to regenerate the western end of King Street in Hammersmith.

The plans will involve the creation of a public piazza on the site of the ugly town hall extension with shops, homes and civic buildings.

Visitors to the exhibition will see photographs, artists’ impressions and scale models of the three possible schemes before being asked to give feedback through a questionnaire.

Hammersmith town hall will play host to the exhibition from the three developers left in the running: Galliford Try, Grainger/Helical Bar and St James's Investments.

Cllr Mark Loveday, Hammersmith and Fulham Cabinet Member for Strategy, said: "The proposals that were brought forward in 2004 were wrong in several ways, not least because the views of local people weren’t listened to properly. This has been different right from the outset. We have engaged with local residents at every stage along the way.

"The exhibition is another fantastic opportunity for residents to see the three finalists before we decide on our partner early next year.”

All three schemes are expected to propose the demolition of the seven storey 1970s concrete extension – once awarded the “ugliest building in Hammersmith” annual prize by local amenity groups – and replacing it with a new piazza which will open up views of the art deco façade of the original town hall.

Cllr Loveday concludes, “This is a vital project for Hammersmith, but it must be of the highest quality. Too many of these schemes in the past look tired almost before they are completed. I want future generations to be proud of their town hall and that is why we are ensuring residents are involved in every stage to make sure so we get this right.”

The exhibition will be held in the Playfair Room in Hammersmith town hall. Residents are welcome to view the displays between 10.00am-4.00pm from Saturday November 17 to Friday November 23.

The exhibition is closed on Sunday November 18 and is open until 8.00pm on Thursday November 22.
