Plans Submitted for Demolition of Hammersmith Palais

Comment on redevelopment plans by September 8th

Detailed planning applications for the demolition of Hammersmith Palais and the development of a 10 storey building in its place has been submitted to Hammersmith and Fulham Council by property giants London and Regional.

The proposed new building at 242 Shepherd's Bush Road will be partly ten storeys high and partly five, and will consist of leisure and retail space, plus student accommodation.

Outside it is proposed there will be four car spaces, 232 bicycle parking spaces and external amenity space.

The council planning department says the proposal constitutes a major development and it has been referred to the Mayor's office.

Hammersmith Palais, one of the borough's most iconic buildings, first opening in 1919 as a jazz venue called the Hammersmith Palais de Danse. In the 1930s it was used as an ice rink and then became a dance club before becoming one of London's most popular live music venues.

In January 2007, the decision was made to demolish it, and it closed that April. Since then it has lain empty.

Details of the proposals can be inspected at the planning office, at Reception Third Floor, Hammersmith Town Hall Extension in King Street between 8.45am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.
