Residents celebrate winning green grant

Brackenbury residents have won a grant of £21,250 from Mayor Boris Johnson to plant much new trees in local streets.

Brackenbury Residents Association applied for the grant from the Mayor's Street Trees programme in July and discovered they had been awarded the funds last month.

The grant will enable the group to purchase and plant about 85 new trees in addition to the 36 trees they have already established in Brackenbury.

The new planting is planned for the first few months of next year, focusing on Glenthorne Road, Banim Street, Cambridge Grove and Hammersmith Grove.

In Glenthorne Road, the association hope to plant plane trees in the rather bleak north and west to match the trees already growing at the eastern end of the road.

Other tree selections will depend on Hammersmith and Fulham Council's recommendations after looking at pavement widths and pipe-work under the pavements.

The Brackenbury tree project first took root in 2007 and is supported by a team of 26 local people who regularly water the neighbourhood's trees.
