How older adults in Fulham are making a difference for working mums

With the increasing demands of the modern workplace, many working parents are struggling to balance challenging jobs with raising young children. Recently however, they have begun to find a willing ally in older adults who want to help local families with their after school childcare.

London start up business Koru Kids now helps older individuals interested in after school nannying as a part time job to find work. They are paired with local families in need of help bridging the hours between the end of school, and when they can make it home from work. Following success in other areas, the company is now searching for more after school nannies in Fulham to keep up with the level of parent demand.

Koru Kids discovered that the traditional options for after school childcare were becoming increasingly scarce. Especially concerning are the Ofsted figures which reveal a 27% drop in the number of childminders in England between August 2012 and March 2018. Demand for the elusive after school nanny is therefore rising. They can therefore offer a lifeline for a busy family, even if they only work for a few afternoons a week. The impact of this childcare can be the difference between working parents being able to return to work to continue their careers rather than abandoning them in order to stay at home.

more experienced after school nannies

Speaking about the value these more experienced after school nannies can offer, Koru Kids founder Rachel Carrell explained:

“Having had their own careers, and often having brought up their own children and grandchildren, these older adults understand the support that working parents need, and so can be relied upon to be responsible, supportive and great communicators. These qualities ensure that they can have a positive impact on the lives of working families.”

Feedback has been very positive from parents who have welcomed these after school nannies into their homes:

"She really is fantastic. A proper grown-up. She knows some of our neighbours and is part of our community, which feels more important than I expected it to. She's a great role model. She spends time doing art with our kids and actually seems to be enjoying them (so far!). She is very straightforward to communicate with, which is half the battle won."
