The Slug Has Been Swallowed by a Redback Spider!

Fulham Broadway pub gets a makeover - and a venomous new name

The Slug, the long established pub on Fulham Broadway, is getting a facelift for autumn - and an unusual new name.

After three weeks of refurbishment, the long established pub at 490 Fulham Road will reopened on 8 September renamed The Redback - after Australia's most deadly spider.

On its Facebook page the pub, which describes itself as an Aussie/Kiwi party bar, says: "We’ve been eaten!!

" The Slug has been swallowed whole by Australia's most venomous spider, The Redback.

"We will be shut for 3 weeks whilst the Redback digests The Slug and we will be back even stronger than ever!

"Same parties, same team, same craziness that you know and love BUT with some added extras. Food, Brand new design , Sport , and open ALL day everyday to name just a few!"

The Redback, which is operated by pub giant Stonegate, emphasises that it is still the same bar, with the same owners, who add: " We just decided to give it a new name while we do the refurbishment. So the Party will go on , Just improving the bar!"

Ahead of its general relaunch on Sunday 8 September, there will be a reopening party, with details of how to obtain and invitation to be added to the Facebook page.

There has been a pub on this central site for at lest 150 years. It was mentioned in the 1871 census under its original name The Red Lion, and the lion can still be seen on the rooftop today, though it is no longer red. In recent years it has had a number of incarnations as a music and theme pub, including spells as Leo's, Henry J Beans and Fiesta Havana before becoming The Slug.

Its relaunch follows the reopening of the Butcher's Hook at Stamford Bridge earlier this month after being given an extensive 'six figure' makeover.

Two others reopened their doors earlier this year following major refurbishments - Brook House and Aragon House, both on New Kings Road.
