Local musicians celebrate win in National Championships
Fulham Brass Band are celebrating after their latest win in this year's National Brass Band Championships, held on September 20.
The band say: " An early start left Fulham Brass Band a little hungry and bleary eyed as we set off to compete at the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain 2014 held at Cheltenham Racecourse.
" Weeks of hard work from the band and our conductor John Ward had prepared us well but nothing could hold back the nerves felt by many on the day. The very beautiful but technical 'Traversada' composed by Oliver Waespi challenged all the bands but we managed to put on a pretty good show and were able to come away with another trophy as 3rd prize winners of the Second section.
" Let’s hope our winning streak continues as we enter our most challenging of years competing in the First Section from January!"
Only two bands from each brass band region in the country qualify to partake in the national event. Like football, brass bands are divided into sections and can get promoted or demoted each year depending on their results in competitions.
Fulham Brass Band have been going from strength to strength climbing from the fourth section over the past decade and are delighted to be promoted to the First Section from January 2015, marking a return to the top two sections for the first time since 1909.
Formed in 1895, Fulham Brass Band have a long history of music making and strong links with the community, and play mix of events from high profile TV gigs to community engagements to traditional brass band contests.
The band rehearse every Monday evening from 7.30pm to 10.00pm upstairs in St. John’s Church, Fulham and say as with most brass bands, a variety of music each week — some music will be used as a one-off to improve sight-reading, others will be played regularly in preparation for upcoming concerts, recordings or contests.
If you you are interested in playing with the band, you can check out the vacancies and contat them through the website.
