Vanston Place Scheme Gets Go Ahead

New development will be "twin" to Fulham Island

The derelict bingo hall opposite St John's Church in VanstonPlace is set to be demolished and replaced with a new development providing 42 new homes.

The new scheme, designed by architects CZWG has been approved Hammersmith & Fulham council.

The scheme is a sister building for the colourful "Tutti Frutti" bu ilding on Fulham Island.

The T shaped building will have a continuous façade to the street with a wing running back into the depth of the site with gardenson either side.

This wing will be on a split level, half a storey lower than the frontage. The plan includes 42 apartments - one fifth of which will be "affordable" - including family units with private outside spaces. All the flats will have balconies or terraces.

Fulham Island, the mix of new and existing buildings which includes the Tutti Frutti building on the square overlooking St John’s Church and gardens has become a local landmark since it was completed i 2001.

Architects CZWG says the design evolved through "very constructive consultation with planning officers and local residents".

The planners' report said the proposed building had been developed from a carefully considered analysis of the surrounding townscape and the role of the building within it, and added that it was a high quality contextual façade with presence, and an appropriate backdrop and setting for St Johns Church.

Last year, the council turned down another plan for the derelict building -  currently a local eyesore - which would have provided accommodation for 150 students.
