Some of the messages were simply from local people shocked by her death, starting with "I did not know you but ..."  while others were from people obviously close to her. Among the most poignant was the heartfelt message: " Darling Briony - love you forever".

Ms McRoberts, 56 appeared in many TV shows including Taggart, EastEnders, Heartbeat and The Bill and starred in Scottish soap Take The High Road for nine years.

Her husband is David Robb, who plays Dr Clarkson in Downton Abbey. He has reportedly been a volunteer for The Samaritans in London for 25 years.

Her agent released a statement confirming that the actress took her own life.

Katie Threlfall said: "It's just a terrible, terrible loss of a wonderful woman. Nobody had any idea it was going to happen. Her husband is deeply shocked.

"She was a wonderful woman who had troubles and she will be very much missed. She was so well-loved and was the most vibrant character you could hope to meet. It is just a tragedy."

Ms McRoberts' death took place at the height of the rush hour in front of dozens of horrified onlookers.

Emergency services rushed to the station but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
