As interiors showroom Talisman 'retires' from Art Deco former garage

Fulham's most iconic building, the Art Deco former garage at 79 - 91 New King's Road is up for sale as its current owner, interiors showroom Talisman 'retires' at the end of July.

The Lorenz Consultancy, which is handling the sale of the building at an undisclosed price, says: " Originally designed as a petrol filling station, 79-91 New King’s Road is acknowledged as one of Britain’s finest examples of the Art Deco period.

" It was described by The New York Times' Laura Latham as 'standing out like a cruise ship in berth' . The property dates from 1939 and its sleek geometric lines are typical of industrial architecture."

One its website, Talisman says: " The magnificent Talisman building dates back to 1939 and therefore postdates the Art Deco period breaking into modernism. Its sleek lines have dumped any embellishment of the Art Deco.

" Ken Bolan bought the building in 2006, at which time it was due for demolition. He then had a ten month battle to have the demolition permission rescinded and embarked on the building restoration. His whole idea was to be truthful to the original design.

"It took a further ten months to complete the restoration and upgrade the facilities. He even found the original drawings for the entrance gates in the public records office and had them recreated by a West Country blacksmith."

Since then, the store says: "Talisman has evolved from an antiques store to the exquisite mid-century modern filled emporium it is today.

" Our current showroom holds a wide array of stock from many of the world’s most admired designers such as Paul Evans, Vladamir Kagan, Pierre Cardin and Milo Baughman amongst many other treasures.

"The collections that we hold explore how international visionaries have shaped aesthetics, experimented with forms, colours and materials and created beauty that has lasted through decades. The curation of products is truly spectacular and is the perfect spot for any design lover to lose themselves in.

"Today the building is much admired and photographed. It has become once again a landmark building."

Now however, Talisman is 'retiring' and says: "For your last chance to acquire "that last piece of Talisman", we are offering 50% off all stock until the brass and glass doors close on the 31st of July.

The Lorenz Consultancy describes the sale of the building as a "rare freehold opportunity" to buy a 5,000 square foot ground floor A1 retail/showroom with vacant possession and potential to create a basement floor."

It adds that there is also the potential to change the use from the existing A1 permission.

Not included in the sale are a number of apartments on the upper floors of the building, including this spectacular lateral penthouse with views across Eel Brook Common.
