Sainsbury's Opens Two More Stores in SW6

Supermarket giant Sainsbury's has opened one new store in Fulham this week and is now planning another - while closing an existing store in North End Road.

The newest local store opened this week on the site of the former Wheatsheaf pub on Fulham Road, close to Darlan Road and Parson's Green Lane.

The store, which is midway between Sainsbury's store within Fulham Broadway and another local store at 295 - 297 Fulham Road was opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony performed by Hammersmith and Fulham Mayor, Cllr Frances Stainton. The store has chosen to support the Brunswick Youth Club, a centre in central Fulham offering activities to boys and girls aged eight to 18.

A site at 132 Wandsworth Bridge Road has also been pre-let as a Sainsbury's Local store. Demolition of the existing building is now underway and the new store is expected to open in late 2014.

Both these buildings also include a number of homes on the upper floors. In Wandsworth Bridge Road there will be nine two bedroom flats, according to asset management specialist Ganco, while the rooms above the former Wheatsheaf are eight one bedroom apartments, which are now for sale through agent Strutt and Parker, priced from £430,000.

On Fulham's riverside, construction is also well underway at Barratt's development Fulham Wharf, which will have a new Sainsbury's superstore at its heart, replacing the current store.

However, the supermarket has also confirmed that amongst these openings, it has decided not to renew the lease on its local store in North End Road when it expires later this year.

A spokesman for the supermarket says: " We have decided to consolidate our offer in the local area to ensure more efficient trading operations and will be closing our North End Road store when the existing lease comes to an end in October.

" We have informed colleagues and every employee will be relocating to a nearby store and remaining with Sainsbury's."
