New Phase of Gas Mains Work Underway on Fulham Road

Chelsea and Westminster updates advice as westbound lane is closed

Cadent, which is the new name for National Grid Gas Distribution, has been replacing and upgrading old metal gas mains with new pipes on Fulham Road, which has meant the closure of the westbound lane and the use of temporary traffic lights and bus stops.

This next phase of work runs between between Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and Beaufort Street. During the works, the westbound lane of Fulham Road is closed and as shown above, buses, including routes 14 and 414 are being diverted south down Beaufort Street onto Kings Road and returning to Fulham Road via Gunter Grove.

Temporary traffic lights have also been installed at each end of the works.

Chelsea and Westminster has updated its advice to patients and visitors about access to the hospital during the works.

On its website, the hospital says: "Gas mains replacement works have now begun outside of the St Stephen's Centre with the existing crossing removed and replaced with temporary lights to control traffic. Please use the remaining crossing opposite Boots.

"Please note that journey times to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital will be greatly increased due to the works.

"Bus stops are suspended during this period to ease congestion. The disabled parking bays on the hospital side of Netherton Grove have been suspended.

"The hospital car park is open but the works may cause substantial queueing both in and out.

"The gas mains replacement programme is crucial to providing safe and reliable energy to homes and businesses and will reduce the amount of unplanned work to repair ageing gas pipes."

This current work forms part of a five year project to upgrade gas pipes which extended into Westminster and across the river into Wandsworth and which included work on Kings Road last year and further works this year in Parsons Green.

Cadent says the work is going well and scheduled for completion by the end of September.
