The park, which gets its nickname from the wood statue at its centre, is be transformed after community group Sands End Associate Projects in Action, or SEAPIA won £12,000 of funding through supermarket chain Tesco’s Bags of Change initiative.

The group will  now use the money for a project called The Big Community Plant Up, which aims to involve local people young and old in planting up the park's empty flower beds.

The group was shortlisted for a share of £12.5 million raised by the supermarket giant through its 5p plastic bags charge. This total is being used for grants, managed by the community charity Groundwork UK  to improve local parks, hold community events, support sports groups and more.

Anyone can anyone can nominate a project at any time - whethere supporters or the community groups themselves. Tesco colleagues and Groundwork then whittle nominations down to three local projects each month in every Tesco region and cusromers can vote in store for favourite projects each time they shop.

Each month, all three projects will receive funding - keep a look out for the results in store and online.

So far over £24 million has been invested into local projectsrun by 2421 community groups.

“Not only will this project help with the council’s ambition to be the greenest in the country, but will bring old and young members of the community together in a way that benefits everyone. We were delighted to support SEAPIA’s funding bid and we’re grateful to everyone who voted for them to win.”
