Poundland opens just yards from Poundworld on North End Road

The two biggest budget retailers will soon be competing for your custom in North End Road as Poundland opens its doors on June 27 just yards from its biggest rival Poundworld.

Poundworld, which also has a branch in Shepherd's Bush, opened in May last year on the site left vacant by the collapse of the Peacocks chain, while rival Poundland, which also has stores in Hammersmith and Shepherd's Bush is moving into the redeveloped site next to McDonalds.

The two chains, which call themselves "single price retailers" are also competing with a number of independent budget shops in North End Road.

What's the difference between the two?

Yorkshire based Poundworld, which describes itself as "family owned" was launched in 2004 after rebranding from Everything’s a £1 and now has over 180 stores nationwide. The company plans to open a further 200 stores in the next five years.

Poundland, based in the West Midlands, says its founders first came up with the simple concept of selling a range of over 3,000 items at £1 each in April 1990. The chain has now grown to over 400 stores, with more in the pipeline.

Both chains support charities - Poundland has a partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support annd holds regular fundraising events in its stores and head office while Poundworld Poundworld is the main sponsor of Derek's Walk 2013, a sponsored walk starting on July 1 from Leeds to John O’Groats, on to Land’s End then back to Leeds. All on foot! 

Derek Brown, who has already raised almost £600,000 by taking on challenges for a range of charities, will be walking the 1,853 miles in aid of four charities: Hearing Dogs, Variety Club,Get kids going and Children with Cancer UK. You can find out more at Derek's Walk 2013
