Second award for revamped park in four months
This is the second award for the Lillie Road park in four months. In November 2009, it won a Landscape Institute Award and it has now received another prestigious honour, following a ceremony in Liverpool last week.
The park reopened in July 2008 following a £3 million transformation led by the council, neighbourhood regeneration programme North Fulham New Deal for Communities (NDC) and Arts Council England.
The judges said: " A park re-design that creates an innovative, sustainable, high quality green space, reflecting the character and history of the area. Serving a large and diverse residential population, the park is now flexible in use, offering choice in relaxation, active pursuits and play for all.
" The layout has created an imaginative and loosely compartmented open space, a bowls area, play areas, a community garden, and a cafe, which is run by volunteers from the Friends of Normand Park.
" This is very much a park for the local community and the design has benefited enormously from working with local groups."
David Bowler, Director of the NDC, said: "The regeneration of Normand Park has been a long standing priority for the NDC and local community. I am delighted that the vision and efforts of the NDC, our council partners and the committed residents who worked with us, have been recognised at the Civic Trust awards."
The park's features include a large play area with outside table tennis tables, climbing walls, ball games area, wildflower planting and sand pit, a BMX practice area, a new tree lined walk around the bowling green and an open grass area with picnic decks and wildflowers.
The park boasts an underground water tank which collects rain water to irrigate it.
Also very popular with local people are Normand Park's community garden and the monthly table top sales. The next sale will be on Sunday, March 28 from 11am till 4pm - part of a fun day which includes an East Egg Hunt from 1pm till 4pm.
