Council asks for help with lunch at Hammersmith Town Hall

Hammersmith and Fulham Council is calling on local people to help make Christmas special for up to 300 of the borough's older residents who normally spend the day alone.

The council's annual Christmas Day lunch has been running for over 20 years, offering people over 60 who would be alone the chance to come together at Hammersmith Town Hall for roast turkey with all the trimmings.

The council is on the lookout for any individuals or local companies who may be able to provide donations either of food, gifts or simply their time.

Last year gifts and monetary donations from over 40 companies and numerous individuals in the borough helped the Council to deliver a Christmas meal to remember and presents for all the guests.

Over 100 volunteers contributed to the day itself last year - from serving Christmas lunch, making sure the guests had everything they need and even joining in with a dance. All volunteer help is invaluable and without their enthusiasm and support, the Christmas Day party would not be possible.

Councillor Adronie Alford, Mayor of the borough says: “Christmas is a time for families to be together. Unfortunately not all of us are lucky enough to have friends or family around. That is why the council will once again hold our annual Christmas Day lunch party for older people who would otherwise spend Christmas alone.

" We rely heavily on the support of residents and businesses who donate or volunteer to make this special event possible and to me this truly demonstrates the spirit of Christmas. Every single donation gives us a chance to deliver some well needed Christmas cheer to very special borough residents."

Roy Heath, who lived at the house in Alderville Road, Parsons Green, where a body has been discovered buried in the garden, is reported to have once worked for the notorious Kray Twins.

Heath, who is suffering from terminal cancer, was arrested on Tuesday and bailed to return at the end of the month.

Police have also made two further arrests following Wednesday's discovery of the body, which was wrapped in carpet.

Their latest statement says that on the afternoon of March 10, two men aged 47 and 52 were arrested and taken into custody.

Police had already arrested Heath, 52 at a hospice in Lambeth where he is receiving treatment. He was bailed to return at the end of March pending further enquiries.

Heath reportedly became friendly with notorious gangland killer Reggie Kray after meeting him in prison, and also worked for Kray and his twin brother Ronnie.

According to The Sun, police were told in 1997 that Heath had murdered a business partner, but nothing could be proved at the time.

A post-mortem will be held at Fulham mortuary on Friday March 12.

An incident room has opened at Belgravia under DI Tim Dobson of the Homicide and Serious Crime Squad. DI Dobson says: "It is believed that the body may have been at the scene between 15 and 20 years. Whilst enquiries are underway to establish the identity of this person, we are keen to speak to anyone who may have lived in this road around that time.
