Late night licence for newsagent "would lead to rowdy behaviour"
A local newsagent whose shop is situated on Putney Bridge has had an application to sell alcohol daily until 1am turned down by the council's licensing sub-committee.
The sub-committee also banned Putney Bridge News from selling any high-strength beer, lager or cider above 5.5% alcohol.
Many residents had objected to the council regarding the proposals to sell alcohol until the early hours, claiming that the lengthy licensing hours would lead to antisocial behaviour.
As a result councillors ruled that the newsagent can only sell alcohol until 9pm every night.
Cllr Victoria Brocklebank-Fowler, Chairman of the licensing committee, said: "The committee considered the comments from local residents and ruled that allowing this premise to sell alcohol until 1am would lead to excessive drunk and rowdy behaviour.
"We believe that 9pm is late enough for this newsagent to sell alcohol."
The sub-committee ruled that Putney Bridge News must also provide a bin to help tackle problems with littering.
