King Road Pipe Work Completed Three Weeks Early

Fast work by National Grid means traffic is back to normal

There was relief for motorists and residents of the eastern end of Fulham this week, as road works on Kings Road were completed three weeks ahead of schedule.

National Grid Gas has been working to replace a faulty 24 inch gas main in Kings Road, causing massive transport disruption as an east facing section of the road had to be closed and cars and buses diverted onto Fulham Road.

The work was originally planned to finish on June 30 – the final day that planned highways work is allowed to go ahead in the capital before the Olympics embargo on road works which starts from July 1.

It was then announced it would be completed by June 24 - but instead, it was completed and the road opened on Monday.

Hammersmith and Fulham council says it had continuously demanded National Grid finish the project as quickly as possible.

Councillor Nicholas Botterill, leader of H&F Council, said: "This is excellent news for motorists, businesses and residents who have been caught up in traffic jams over the past few weeks.

"We have been constantly pressing National Grid Gas during these works, with our network inspectors making sure that workers have been on site when they should and doing their jobs properly. We are pleased that progress has been swift but will continue to monitor the situation closely and keep the pressure on National Grid Gas to get the scheme out of the way.

"It is a huge relief that the work will be completed much sooner than anticipated and we hope the mains pipe will no longer be the nagging pain it once was to residents."

The gas pipe had suffered six leaks in the past 18 months, leading to a series of emergency repairs.
