Barratt has contract to provide new homes, supermarket and riverwalk
Work has begun on the redevelopment of Fulham Wharf - the site on Fulham's Townmead Road which includes Sainbury's, its car park and the derelict wharf.
Tons of rubbish is being cleared from the whard - which for years has been one of the area's biggest eyesores - and the bulldozers are expected to move in shortly.
Earlier this month it was announced that developer Barratt London had won the contract, in partnership with L&Q, to deliver a new Sainsbury’s store on the site, along with 463 residential units, as well as a number of retail units and a renovation of the currently unused jetty, which will become an ecological area for wildlife.
The regeneration programme now aims to turn the warehouse into space for new shops and homes, with restaurants and cafes boasting extensive landscaping and outdoor seating.
The scheme was designed by local architects Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands.
Planning permission for the project was granted by the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham earlier this year, and the supermarket giant has since been in discussions with development partners to renovate the area.
Sainsbury’s property director Neil Sachdev said he was “thrilled” to be teaming up with Barratt London on the project.
“We always aim to play an important role in the local community and are looking forward to opening up this part of the Thames for the benefit of both our customers and heighbours," he said.
“This will provide a new shopping and living experience unique to this part of London.
The two companies, who hope to have completed the first homes on the site by summer 2014, say they will also create a new riverside path on a stretch that has been inaccessible for years.
The development will be in two phases, beginning with the construction of a huge new superstore and around a half of the apartments. The existing store will then be demolished and the remaining flats will be built in its place.
The companies hope to complete the project by 2017.
