Fulham's New Theatre Offers A Catered Affair

Highlight of first season begins this week on New Kings Road

The highlight of London Theatre Workshop's highly successful first season at its new home on New Kings Road begins this week.

Ray Rackham and David Keefe return to London Theatre Workshop, in a new boutique theatre above the Eel Brook pub, to direct and musically direct the UK professional premiere of the Broadway musical, A Catered Affair, written by Harvey Fierstein and John Bucchino.

This will be followed by a fresh revival of Fierstein’s Torch Song Trilogy, in July, which will close the first season of plays and musicals.

This production marks the first time A Catered Affair has been produced professionally in London, and it will run from June 3 - 21.

A uniquely human story of a Bronx mother’s efforts to give her only daughter the elaborate wedding she never had - and the bride never asked for! In this funny and poignant musical of love and disaffection, A Catered Affair explores both our need for love and the true meaning of family.

A Catered Affair features a nine-strong, ensemble cast, and is directed by London Theatre Workshop’s Artistic Director, Ray Rackham, with musical direction by David Keefe who previously were the team behind the fortieth anniversary productions of Sondheim’s Company (2010) and “Follies” (2011) and most recently on Just Another Love Story.

The cast includes Maggie Robson (“Follies”, Pleasance Theatre) and Howard Samuels (“Tonight’s The Night”, Victoria Palace; “Rocky Horror Show”, Duke of York’s; “Rebel in Paradise”, Young Vic) playing husband and wife, Aggie and Tom Hurley. David Anthony (“Joseph…”, UK Tour) plays Uncle Winston, with Aimee Matthews (“Just Another Love Story”, London Theatre Workshop) and Calum Melville playing the bride and bridegroom, Janey and Ralph.

A Catered Affair premiered on Broadway in the 2007/2008 season, and was nominated for a season record of 12 Drama Desk nominations, and was chosen as Best Musical by the New York Drama League. London Theatre Workshop will use its unique 65 seat boutique theatre space to create an intimate production, with audiences feeling close enough to the action that they are essentially the final member of the family around the dinner table.
