What's on in May at Fulham Palace


Including talks on herbs, history and beetles plus bank holiday fun for kids

 

May is another busy month at Fulham Palace, with events including gardens walks and talks on herbs, flowers, nature and history and bank holiday fun for children.

Here's this month's schedule:

Saturday 7 May, 1pm-5pm - Kitchen Pharmacy

Kitchen Pharmacy - Talk at Fulham Palace

Join Alex Laird from Living Medicine for this inspirational afternoon on how certain foods and herbs can be used to improve everyday self-care and health.

Learn through practical demonstrations, followed by a walk through our historic Walled Garden. You will also receive a useful guide to take home.

This is the first in a five part series; it is possible to receive a Certificate of Attendance should you choose to pursue the full course with Living Medicine.

Monday 9 May, 2pm-3pm - Head Gardener’s Surgery

Have a tricky gardening problem you can't fix at home? Sign up for this session where Lucy Hart, Head Gardener will give tailored advice for all of your garden related conundrums.

Tuesday 10 May, 6.30pm-8pm - Stag Beetles

Stage Beetles, subject of talk at Fulham Palace

Laura Bower, Conservation Officer for the People’s Trust for Endangered Species, leads this talk on these spectacular insects which as well as being the largest, are sadly one of our rarer beetles. Learn what we can do to protect them.

Monday 16 May, 2pm  -Mrs Creighton: “a woman of strong personality”

Louise Creighton was a remarkable woman. A pioneer of women’s education, a published historian and a champion for women workers, she also managed to run the Bishop’s household and bring up seven children.

Curator Miranda Poliakoff will talk about Mrs Creighton’s life both at Fulham and in the wider world, eighty years after her death.

Saturday 21 May, 10.30am-12.15pm - Young Archaeologists’ Club: Medieval Medicine

Want to learn about Archaeology but don't know where to start? Then the Fulham Palace Young Archaeologists' Club is the place for you. Meeting monthly on Saturday mornings the club will explore the fascinating world of archaeology through practical hands on sessions with real archaeologists.

Sunday 22 May, 10am-4pm - Floral Meadow Box Arrangement

Join florist Helen Cranmer for this workshop inspired by the aroma that would have filled the Palace in Tudor times. Use herbs and foliage gathered from the Palace garden to produce a beautifully scented arrangement to sit within your home.

You will be shown how to prepare and condition flowers and foliage, and techniques for constructing arrangements within containers.

Monday 30 May, 1pm-3.30pm - Storytelling

Hear interactive tales about nature in these half-hour storytelling sessions. Taking place at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm on our Main Lawn.

Free, no booking necessary. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tuesday 31 May, 10am-12pm and 1pm-3pm - Fulham Palace Fun Day

Discover how people lived in Tudor times though crafts, storytelling and dressing up! With Hammersmith and Fulham Adult Learning and Skills Service.

Hear the Palace’s history brought to life in these tales of the characters who lived here and stories inspired by our beautiful surroundings.

Join the Palace Explorers, weekly parent/carer and toddler sessions for children aged 2-4. £3 per child, which includes a drink and healthy snack, booking essential.

Thursday 12 May, 2pm - Garden Walk

Join this tour of the Fulham Palace garden and discover more about its history and the rare plants grown at the Palace today.

The garden has a long and fascinating history dating back to the Tudor period when Bishop Grindal introduced the tamarisk to England through to Bishop Compton’s famous collection of plants in the early 1700s.
