Fulham Camerata will bring two towering figures of English music into conversation later this month, as the choir presents its summer concert at All Saints Church, Fulham on Saturday 27 June at 7.30pm.
The programme pairs Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas with a selection of choral works by Benjamin Britten, offering audiences an evening that spans more than three centuries of musical tradition.
At the heart of the concert is Purcell’s much-loved opera, a compact but emotionally expansive work whose blend of drama, lyricism and expressive clarity has secured its place as one of the great masterpieces of the Baroque era. Its story of love, fate and departure remains as affecting today as when it was first performed in the 1680s, and Fulham Camerata will perform it under the direction of Harry Guthrie.
Balancing Purcell’s intensity are works by Britten, whose distinctive twentieth-century voice reshaped English choral writing. The choir will sing pieces including Jubilate Deo and Festival Te Deum, both of which showcase Britten’s luminous harmonies, rhythmic energy and instinctive understanding of the human voice. Together, the two composers create a programme that highlights the continuity and evolution of English musical identity, despite the centuries that separate them.
For local audiences, the concert is also a chance to hear one of Fulham’s most active community choirs in the atmospheric surroundings of All Saints Church, a venue whose acoustic lends itself naturally to choral performance.
The concert takes place at All Saints Church, Putney Bridge Approach, SW6 3LA. Tickets are £20 for standard admission and £15 for students under-25s, available both online and on the door.
