Car Crash Reconstructions Planned in Parsons Green on Saturday
See how emergency services deal with serious traffic collision
Residents will have the chance on Saturday to see how the emergency services deal with a serious car crash, with two graphic reconstructions of a traffic collision in Fulham.
Local fire, police and ambulance services, Hammersmith and Fulham Volunteer Service and H & F Council have teamed up to take part in the reconstruction of a crash between a motorcyclist and a car in Parsons Green.
Volunteers will play the roles of the crash victims – the car driver and passengers, and the injured biker.
Firefighters from the London Fire Brigade will cut passengers out of the car while paramedics from the London Ambulance Service will demonstrate their life-saving and emergency medical skills, as they tend to the motorbike rider. Officers from the Metropolitan Police Force will show how they deal with the accident and the public.
There will be two reconstructions happening on July 6 at 12 noon and 2.30pm on Parsons Green, just outside Lady Margaret School. The road safety event coincides with the annual Fair on the Green.
The aim of the event is to highlight the risks of driving while under the influence of drugs or drink, and how dangerous driving can ruin lives, as part of the Department for Transport’s ‘Morning After’ safety awareness campaign.
It also forms part of the council’s Get H&F Moving campaign that looks to ease transport problems in the borough, in this case by educating road users and trying to reduce collisions, which can lead to traffic jams and slow moving traffic.
Councillor Victoria Brocklebank-Fowler, H&F Council’s cabinet member for transport and technical services, says: " We hope that this simulated crash will stay in people’s minds so that they go away thinking about how they should behave on the roads, and how to stay safe out there. If that message sticks with them, then our efforts could lead to fewer accidents and severe collisions on our roads and, in turn, fewer road disruptions too."
The event will also focus on the importance of seatbelts, child safety seats and safe motorcycling, with advice and support from the borough’s road safety team, drugs advisory service and community safety team.
Recent figures from Transport for London show that, on average, more than 11 motorcyclists are killed or seriously injured every day in London. Many of those collisions are due to dangerous driving where drink or drugs are involved, and coupled with this, injuries are usually far worse when motorists and/or passengers are not wearing seatbelts.
