Eddie Jones Sports Black Eye at Fulham's Hurlingham Club

Painful looking injury dominates the launch of 6 Nations Championship

When captains and coaches gathered at Fulham's Hurlingham Club for the launch of the 2017 rugby championship, RBS 6 Nations, the event was expected to be dominated by talk of forthcoming drama on the pitch.

Instead though, there was just one topic on everyone's lips - the painful looking black eye sported by England head coach Eddie Jones.

Eddie Jones and his black eye

Eddie, who also had a bandage over his left cheekbone, joked at first that he had suffered the injury taking part in martial arts, but then claimed it was down to a much more mundane accident.

He told the assembled journalists:"I slipped over in the hotel this morning. My Mother told me I always have to shave, I forgot to shave, I walked out of the shower to get the shaver and this is what happens. "

Later though the plot thickened as, asked by Sky Sports who he had been brawling with, he replied: "We've had a bit of fun in the Algarve, we've had a really good training camp.

"It's just one of those things. I slipped over and got hit, nothing too drastic."

Whatever the truth, Australian Eddie remained undaunted. He said: " I'll be all right. I'll be at training on Thursday and ready to go."

The championship will kick off on 4 February with England versus France at Twickenham and Scotland versus France at Murrayfield in Edinburgh.
