Martha's Evening Gown Wins Design a Dress Competition

Gown in shop window now being auctioned for Glass Door charity

A gorgeous evening gown designed by 13 year-old Martha Tromans is being auctioned for charity after winning a competition to find Fulham's newest fashion talent.

Around 300 budding designers aged between ten and 17 took part in the competition, run by Fulham couturier Antonia Pugh-Thomas. But it was Lady Margaret School student Martha's beautiful midnight blue gown which most impressed Antonia with her neat, elegant design and carefully thought out detailing.

"Martha was amazed to have won," says Antonia, who has designed bespoke womenswear for the British and European aristocracy, diplomats and the Queen’s representatives.

" But her design was just what the competition stipulated: elegant, timeless and discreetly sexy.

" It has been very hard as the entries were fantastic and everyone made such a lot of effort," adds Antonia, who wrote to each entrant individually following the competition to offer advice and encouragement.

After her design was chosen by Antonia and couture assistants Robyn Greenall and Michael Mumford Martha was able to come to Antonia’s shop in Fulham Road to see fabric swatches and see the design take shape.

Now on display in pride of place in the window, the 100% silk satin dress, with beaded lace detailing, is being auctioned on eBay until December 20, with all proceeds donated to the charity Glass Door, which works to help homeless people in west London.

" It has been a really lovely competition, and the standard of entries was very high," says Antonia. "It has been a lot of work for everyone, but it’s been a fantastic ride and I hope everyone’s efforts will help Glass Door this Christmas."
