Dance Attic Hosts Wash House Stories

"Pop up " community play shares local memories on Saturday

The Dance Attic Studios in North End Road is hosting a community play called Wash House Stories for one night only on Saturday August 17.

The play is based on memories of the Fulham wash house which used to be on the site of the studios. The wash house was part of Fulham Baths, which were designed by E Deighton Pearson in 1902.

Produced in a series of community drama education workshops, led by playwright and theatre director Rosalind Scanlon, Wash House Stories uses real life stories of people who used the wash house in the 1950s, 60s and into the 70s.

The production features members of Act Your Age Drama, a local drama group for women over 50 who have never acted on the stage before.

Rosalind says : "Fulham’s wash house was a women’s hub, beating at the heart of the community. It was not only a place where women came together to wash and scrub, but it was also a place where they could meet each other, make friends, share their troubles, their burdens, their worries and their stories during hard times. Wash House Stories sets out to pay tribute to this."

She is particularly keen to invite people who remember using the wash house themselve. " Here is your opportunity to return, and take a trip down memory lane," she says.

Wash House Stories comes to the Dance Attic Studios on Saturday, August 17 at 7pm, and there is a "pay what you can afford" rule on the door.
