Hear the Story of Fulham Seamstress Esther Bruce

Library hosts launch of updated edition of acclaimed book

At the launch Stephen will talk about his adopted aunt, Esther Bruce, who was born in Fulham in 1912 and lived in the borough until her death at the age of 81 in 1994.

Her life as a working class seamstress was documented in Stephen's original book, Aunt Esther’s Story in 1991 and at the time its publication helped to make her a local celebrity.

Her photograph appeared on the cover of the Fulham Chronicle and in recent years she has been featured by Stephen in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography and The Oxford Companion to Black British History.

A photograph of Esther has been acquired by the National Portrait Gallery.

Copies of the book, published by History and Social Action Publications will be available to buy at the event, priced £4.
