Fulham Road Reopens Following Major Gas Leak

Chelsea and Westminster Hospital unaffected and front entrance access restored

Fulham Road has reopened along with full access to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital following an earlier gas leak in Hollywood Road directly opposite the hospital.

At 4.30pm London Fire Brigade tweeted @LondonFire: "The gas main has been isolated & order restored to #Fulham Road. Thanks for your patience."

Chelsea and Westminster Hospital meanwhile confirmed: "Access restored following a gas leak on Hollywood Road this morning."

London Fire Brigade say that 100 people were evacuated following the leak.

Firefighters were initially called to a fire in the basement of a property. On arrival crews found the fire was already out but there was a strong smell of gas.

A 50 metre exclusion zone was put in place and the Fulham Road was closed in both directions between Nightingale Place and Edith Grove.

Station Manager Kevin McKenzie said this afternoon: "Around 100 people were evacuated by police and firefighters. The gas board have isolated the main and exclusion zone has been lifted."

Four fire engines and 21 firefighters and officers from Wandsworth, Kensington, Hammersmith and Fulham fire stations were at the incident.

The Brigade was called at 9.36am and the incident was over at 2.40pm.

Chelsea & Westminster Hospital itself was unaffected by the gas leak but the main entrance was closed during the incident.
