Cygnet Players present musical at Oratory School

Local musical theatre group Cygnet Players are donning flapper dresses and trilbies to stage a ritzy performance of the musical Thoroughly Modern Millie from February 17 to 20 at the London Oratory School in Seagrave Road.

The show is Cygnet Players' 30th production to date and follows a successful run of shows last year, including Jekyll & Hyde and Fame.

Based on the 1967 film of the same name, starring Julie Andrews, Thoroughly Modern Millie took Broadway by storm, winning the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2002.

Thoroughly Modern Millie tells the story of a small-town girl, Millie Dillmount, who comes to New York City to marry for money instead of love – a thoroughly modern aim in 1922.

Millie is soon swept away by the flapper lifestyle, but her mission to fall in love with her boss gets derailed when she meets Jimmy. All is not what it seems and together they are embroiled in a madcap plot, involving hidden identities, kidnap and the white slave trade in China.

Director Jonny Clines says: " Millie is a high energy show with a lot of big production numbers so we’ve had our work cut out, but we have really pulled out all the stops to make sure we do the show justice."

There will be nightly performances of the show at 7.45pm, with a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. Tickets cost £15, or £12 concessions. The box office is now open and tickets are available online or by calling 07941 448 689.

Cygnet Players was established as an amateur musical theatre group in 1997. The company is run by a committee of 12 members, who donate their time to ensure both the artistic success and smooth running of the company.

Since then Cygnet Players has developed into a thriving musical theatre group, typically performing musical shows twice yearly, as well as an annual play. The company has an ever-growing membership, aged from 16–60, brought together by a common interest in theatre and entertaining.

New members are always welcome to join. Rehearsals are twice weekly in Southfields (Tuesdays and Thursdays, plus Sundays nearer show dates) and performances are generally in Putney or West Brompton. Shows coming up in 2010, include Allo Allo and Rent.
