A double-barrelled shotgun was picked up by a passerby after its owner left it unattended on the street.
The gun was taken on Thursday, 28 April at around 7.30am outside an address in Langthorne Street, SW6.
The shotgun was in its brown leather zip up case and had been unloaded by its owner from his car. A man is then understood to have picked the shotgun up, made enquiries as to who the owner was, but then left the vicinity with it before the gun's owner returned and found it was gone.
The shotgun is a Beretta EELL 12 gauge double barrel shotgun with a dark brown stock and rose style engraving on handle. The wooden furniture is described as not having been oiled for some time and as such may appear tatty.
Detective Sergeant Matt Besch, from Hammersmith and Fulham CID, said, "We would urge this person who has found the shotgun, to contact us so its recovery can be arranged, and we can ensure it does not fall into the wrong hands."
Anyone who can assist police is urged to contact police in Hammersmith and Fulham CID via 101 quoting ref 6009109/16 so that the firearm's recovery can be arranged.
