Fulham Labelled Burglary Hotspot

SW6 among survey's "surprising" results

Fulham is among five areas in London labelled burglary hotspots in a new survey of Britain's top crime zones.

Price comparison site Moneysupermarket.com says it carried out the survey by analysing 2.6 million home insurance enquiries made on the site last year to find the 20 areas across the country most likely to be targeted by burglars.

The site's head of insurance Julie Owens admits that some of the areas in its 20 riskiest postcodes, including Maidenhead in Berkshire as well as Fulham and Battersea, are surprising. But, she says: " Areas that are quite affluent are more likely to be the target of opportunistic thieves."

Fulham came 11th in the top 20, below Clapham, Hornsey and Croydon and equal with Maidenhead, Bristol, Walthamstow and Forest Hill. According to the survey this means 0.24% of households, or 24 in 1,000, are likely to be burgled.

Hammersmith and Fuham police figures however show that across the borough, the number of bulgaries is falling. In the 12 months leading up to July, there were 1,541 break-ins in Hammersmith and Fulham, compared with 2,020 the previous year.
