Council gives go ahead to transform Walham Green Toilets

Hammersmith and Fulham Council has given the go head for Fulham's best known loo to be turned into a restaurant.

The disused loo, officially known as the Walham Green Toilets, was sold at auction by the council last October.

At the time estate agent Savills described it as "an unusual detached building arranged over ground and basement levels  comprising former public toilets" and added that it had "development potential". Stating the obvious, the agent also said that the toilet was vacant.

The guide price at the auction was £90,000, but after some competitive bidding, it went under the hammer for an astonishing 403,000.

Since then the building, on Vanston Place by St John's Church, has been deserted, but this week a planning application was approved by Hammersmith and Fulham Council.

The applicant, Mr Nigel Hare, aims to change the use of the ground floor and basement to a restaurant, with a new extension added to the side.

Diners in the new restaurant will enjoy a grandstand view of the busy North End Road and its market.
