Hear Fulham Camerata Perform Invictus: A Passion on Saturday

Followed by Fulham Symphony Orchestra playing at Town Hall next weekend

Local choir Fulham Camerata and Fulham's own Symphony Orchestra are both taking to the stage this month to present music by British, French and Russian composers.

This Saturday, 23 March, Fulham Camerata will present Howard Goodall’s Invictus: A Passion at Holy Cross Church in Ashington Road.

As an accompaniment, the choir will also be singing the Messe Solennelle by Louis Vierne, composed in 1899 - a stunning short mass, or Missa Brevis.

Invictus: A Passion premiered on Palm Sunday last year in Houston, Texas and now, almost exactly a year later, Fulham Camerata will showcase the contemporary take on the themes of the traditional Christian Passion story, with particular attention to the perspective of women.

The choir - which meets each week at the church in Ashington Road - is set to balance Goodall’s contemporary work by singing the short mass, or Missa Brevis, Messe Solennelle by Louis Vierne, composed in 1899.

Directed by Harry Castle, the choir’s music director since last summer, the evening of performances will begin at 7.30pm.

Next Saturday, 30 March, Fulham Symphony Orchestra, or FSO, will explore Russian orchestral works at Hammersmith Town Hall.

Part of a series of concerts celebrating the orchestra’s 60th anniversary year, it will feature Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 4 and the UK premiere of Galina Ustvolskaya’s Poem No. 2.

"Shostakovich’s dazzling Fourth Symphony was withdrawn due to Soviet censure before its scheduled 1936 premiere," said Sharon Robinson, chair of Fulham Symphony Orchestra.

"The symphony, scored for an enormous orchestra of over 100 musicians, wasn’t heard publicly until almost 30 years later."

She added that while Galina Ustvolskaya was a pupil of Shostakovich, she developed her own distinctive compositional style.

As part of their 60th anniversary celebrations, the orchestra are also aiming to put on an exhibition of past programmes and other FSO memorabilia for viewing at the concert.
