Prompting call by vicar for North End Road to be pedestrianised
A condolence book has been opened at St Andrew's Church in Greyhound Road following the death of long time parishioner
Elizabeth Jallum, 79 after she was hit by a lorry in North End Road on Friday December 12.
Elizabeth's death is the second tragedy in a week involving a lorry and an elderly woman. On December 9, Assia Nikoforova, 69, died when she was struck by a lorry at the junction of Edith Grove and King's Road.
Elizabeth was hit was by an articulated lorry at around 12.35pm on Friday while crossing the road close to the Iceland supermarket. London Ambulance Service said the pensioner was taken as a priority to St Mary's, but she died of her injuries.
Her death has prompted Reverend Guy Wilkinson, vicar at St Andrew’s to call for the road to be pedestrianises to make it safer.
Reverend Wilkinson told the Fulham Gazette that Elizabeth was known by many in the community who were shocked at what happened. He said: " She was known by many in the community who are shocked at what happened. Market stall holders have got together to put flowers in the church and lots of people I pass have expressed their condolences to me.
" The death of Elizabeth and others has to be a wake up call to do something about safety on North End Road - it’s inhumane. It was shut off to traffic on December 6 very successfully for a festive market and we would like to see that happen all the time. TfL reported no impact on other roads that day so it should be possible, but we’ll leave it up to the experts.
" It’s ridiculous to have giant articulated lorries driving down a road which isn’t made for it. There are so many pedestrians and the market stalls are right on the road which is dangerous.
" It would also help the market which has been around for over 100 years but is struggling now because there’s too much traffic."
Elizabeth's death comes a year after a similar accident in North End Road resulted in the death of 72 year-old Lezli Tauber. At the inquest into his death two months ago, investigating traffic officer PC Martin Fearon and Chinyere Inyama, senior coroner for West London Coroner’s Court both called for a change in the law to have all lorries fitted with central front mirrors.
