Big Changes In Store on Fulham Broadway

With new restaurants, shops and a transformation for local pubs

It's all change this spring around Fulham Broadway, with new restaurants, shops and a transformation for two of Fulham's best known pubs.

The Broadway has lost Indian restaurant Masala Zone, which closed its doors this month after never quite catching on in Fulham. The chain behind the restaurant, which has another branch in Earls Court and also owns Chutney Mary on Kings Road says the site has been converted into a special events venue.

However, the Broadway is gaining Thai Square, which is taking over the site of the notorious bar Vintage on the south side of Fulham Road. Thai Square, which already has branches in South Kensington and on the river at Putney, says the restaurant is Coming Soon.

Meanwhile a battle of the brands has broken out between two hamburger restaurants, the established favourite Gourmet Burger Kitchen and newcomer Byron Hamburgers across the road, though the good news is that both seem to be thriving.

One of the Broadway's big recent successes has been Mexican cantina and bar Guaca and it has now opened a Steakhouse just yards away on North End Road, joining otheer local newcomers, Japanese cafe Don2 on Farm Lane, fish and chip restaurant Perfect Catch in Jerdam Place and Labi Deli Cafe on the corner of Fulham Road and Barclay Road.

Across the road, Havana has closed its doors and reopened as The Slug@Fulham, the latest addition to the Slug and Lettuce chain, and on the corner of Farm Lane, The Malt House has been successfully reoped by brothers Claude and Credric Bosi.

The news for the Broadway isn't all good. The large corner premises occupied by failed venture Union Market is still empty as are the sites of Belushi's bar plus Blockbuster and HMV, both of which fell into adminstration earlier this year.

However, Hammersmith and Fulham Council has approved plans, shown below to turn the large site within Fulham Broadway shopping centre formerly occupied by HMV into three separate stores, though it is not yet known which companies will be taking the new spaces.

Work is also continuing to build Whole Foods Market on the former site of the Blue Elephant restaurant. The store is currently scheduled to open in spring 2014, further changing the face of our local Broadway.
