Councillor Alex Karmel was named the new Mayor of Hammersmith & Fulham at the Annual General Meeting on Wednesday May 28.

Cllr Karmell, the Conservative councillor for Munster Wards, succeeds Cllr Andrew Johnson. He has chosen Help for

Heroes as his Mayoral charity.

Raised on Lillie Road, Cllr Karmel has a strong military background and has served in the Green Jacket Regulars and the Territorial Army Honourable Artillery Company.

Speaking after the AGM, he said: " It is a great privilege to have been nominated to this position and I feel humbled and honoured. I am very proud to be able to represent all the citizens of this diverse and vibrant borough and look forward to serving as Mayor for the coming year.

“Help for Heroes is a magnificent charity, doing wonderful work for soldiers and other servicemen and women who have suffered horrific injuries fighting on our behalf.

"As a military man myself, it is a cause close to my heart and I hope to raise significant funds over the next 12 months.”

Cllr Karmel, who is a keen Chelsea supporter, first became a councillor in 1992 and became ward member for Munster in 2002, during which time he has served as chairman on the licensing committee and vice chairman of the planning committee.

He has named Cllr Jane Law as his consort and Cllr Adronie Alford will serve as his Deputy.

It was also agreed at the AGM that executive responsibility for the borough's parks would fall into Cllr Frances Stainton’s remit. Cllr Mark Loveday was named as the new chief whip.
