Legendary Chelsea player aiming for new Guinness World Record
Chelsea's legendary defender Ron 'Chopper' Harris is taking on a new challenge .. this time not with his feet, but his hands.
Chopper, now 64, is aiming to sign as many autographs as he can over the next year in an attempt to establish a new Guinness World Record.
It's all in aid of the the charity Down's South London, of which he is a patron. Among the youngsters it supports by regular speech and language therapy is the son of one of his close pals at Stamford Bridge.
Ron, who played for Chelsea for nearly two decades after signing on at the age of 15 is held in great affection at Stamford Bridge, where he is a regular matchday meeter and greeter.
Ron says: " I wanted to do something a bit different that can involve everybody and have lots of fun along the way, especially as one of the greatest honours I have in being associated with Chelsea FC is the fact that I get to meet so many loyal fans every week.
" This world record attempt will hopefully help us support such a worthwhile cause whilst also giving me the opportunity to get up and down the country and meet as many football fans as possible at various signing sessions and events. "
Proceeds from the sale of these photos will also help support Down's South London.
"What's great about setting a world record is that the fans have a big part to play, and can really get involved themselves," said Dave Knight, who is coordinating the challenge. "They're as much a part of setting this record as Ron is. It's a fun event for the year, and it's supporting a relatively small, but worthwhile, charity."
