Top dogs will have their day

The Dogs Trust is inviting nomination from dog lovers for

the Dogs Trust Honours 2009.

The winners will be announced at a star-studded awards ceremony at Fulham's Hurlingham Club on May 12.

The Honours, a doggy version of the Pride of Britain Awards

celebrating the myriad ways they enhance their humans'

lives, was flooded with entries when it launched last year. This year the Dogs Trust is hoping for even more entries

from people eager to tell the world about their best friends' achievements.

The charity, which has a rehoming centre in Harefield, West London, has devised five award categories, Hero Dog for working dogs, Dogged Devotion, recognising the achievements of ordinary mutts, Dog's Best Friend, rewarding a person who has gone the extra mile for our four legged friends, Golden Oldie for dogs over seven and the Rex Factor, for a pooch with unique talents. One of these winners will also be chosen as Top Dog 2009.

Dogs Trust Chief Executive, Clarissa Baldwin OBE, says: “Every week Dogs Trust is inundated with stories of how dogs have enriched people’s day to day lives, whether through being a comfort to the sick or the lonely, being a support to those with special needs, or through acts of incredible bravery.   

"The Dogs Trust Honours 2009 are an opportunity to celebrate all these wonderful stories – and the dogs behind them."

Nominations for top dogs can be made online until midnight April 15.
