Glyphosate ban by various councils
I studied chemistry at university and did a postgraduate degree in organic chemistry. The problem with glyphosate is not so much with the herbicide itself as with the use that has been made of it. When used in small quantities is a very effective and safe systemic herbicide. When sold in huge quantities worldwide to farmers who want to spray it all over the place, especially in the US over crops which incorporate a gene to make them resistant to glyphosate, you are de facto selecting for glyphosate-resistant weeds. In addition to this quite predictable problem, there have not been enough tests on the chronic toxicity of glyphosate to all organisms in the environment. When it was used in reasonable quantities this didn't matter, but now that some farmers want to bathe their crops in it, it does...... The shareholders of Monsanto have not complained, of course. There are other herbicides but there is a reason why glyphosate is popular: it is effective. Other methods of weeding will be more labour intensive and less long-lasting.Una-Jane WinfieldSecretary, Friends of Furnivall Gardens
