Shackology Comes to Chiswick
New “gastro-café” to open on former Crown and Anchor site
After an extensive refurbishment, the former Grade II listed Crown and Anchor is set to open as Shackology.
Dubbed a gastro-café, Shackology (or Shack for short) is the creation of Sheila McKenzie who aims to provide “somewhere a bit special, which people won’t want to leave”.
“The kind of place you can drop in to at anytime of day for as little or as much of the simple, freshly prepared food as you like; be it a quick breakfast on the way to work or a lazy supper with friends. Shopaholics beware! With nothing you need and everything you want, the shop will also sell all manner of desirables from quirky tea towels to mercury glass egg cups to vintage tea sets displayed in two large cabinets at the front.”
Sheila is joined on this venture by fellow 'Shackologists' Vicky Smith and Hugo Arnold who have worked in the food and drink and/or design businesses for a long time.
They inform us that the food at Shackology will be a reflection of what it is – a gastro café that is comfortable and easy going. “It is about good food, well sourced, simply cooked. As a result the menu is not long. It changes frequently, but not radically. A main course will cost between £9 - £12 and dinner (including a glass or two of wine) shouldn’t be much more than £25 - £30 per head.”
The old pub has been redecorated to create a relaxed, informal space furnished simply with 1950s style laminate-topped tables and bentwood and chapel chairs. All food is prepared in the open kitchen and, whilst the front area has the feel of an informal café and pastry shop, the wood-burning stove, old leather club chairs and bigger tables in the back rooms encourage a more leisurely pace.
Opening date is set for Monday 23rd April.
