Pub at Strand on the Green plans to make more of its riverside location

The Bell & Crown pub on the riverside is planning a major overhaul with a first floor restaurant and a rooftop terrace.

A planning application has been lodged with Hounslow Council for a first floor open plan restaurant area with a roof terrace accessed from this level through bi-folding doors.

The pub, which is located at Thames Road, Strand on the Green, was first licensed as The Bell & Crown in 1787 and was acquired by Fullers in 1814 and rebuilt in 1907. The conservation area statement of 2006 states that the present public house was built in 1907 and had a small shop embedded in it, originally a butcher. It is well detailed in the Arts and Craft style with original metal windows and tall chimneys.

The architects say in their design statement that,"The proposed design will preserve and enhance all aspects of the character of the traditional style pub."

Although the building is not statutorily or locally listed at present, it is the view of the Council’s Principal Conservation Officer that this should be locally listed due to its well preserved architectural quality and style, and as such the designation of the building may change in future. However, it is not yet decided whether the project will get the go-ahead as planned.

Pre-planning advice from Hounslow Council council concluded,“The proposed first floor extension should be reduced in size in order for this to have a more sympathetic relationship with the original building and to better reveal its features when viewed from public vantage points.
